I am completing my 18th year as an educator in Delaware Public Schools. I hold two Master’s Degrees: Special Education and Educational Leadership. During my service as a public school educator I have served in leadership roles on teams, committees, and departments. I am a firm believer in the importance of collaboration, understanding and equity. I am a graduate, facilitator and project coach with the Equity Practitioners Program. This education focused background supports my understanding of the importance of transparency, communication and engaging with stakeholders.
The most pressing issue in our district is student behavior and mental health. Positive behavior is key to a safe, supportive learning environment. Behavior is communication, and we must meet student needs. To address this, we should prioritize Social Emotional Learning and positive behavioral interventions to help students manage emotions, build empathy, and form relationships. Clear behavior expectations, recognition, and consistent feedback are essential. The school board must also support restorative practices, encouraging students to take responsibility, understand their impact, and work toward resolution. A holistic, supportive approach requires effective staff to meet these needs within schools.
Curriculum decisions should be inclusive and transparent, ensuring students' right to a comprehensive, equitable education. This includes protecting intellectual freedom for students and teachers to engage with diverse ideas. The school board should support a diverse curriculum that fosters critical thinking, problem-solving, and civic engagement. Any decisions must reflect diversity, inclusion, and non-discrimination while representing all students' needs. School boards should engage in open dialogue with the community, addressing concerns while emphasizing the curriculum’s value. Education should foster curiosity and open-mindedness, not censorship.
Ensuring equitable access in the district involves data-driven decisions to identify and address achievement gaps. We must recruit diverse, effective educators committed to culturally responsive teaching. There must be ongoing effective professional development for training educators. There must be inclusive policies implemented that foster a positive school climate. There must be a culturally relevant curriculum with individualized support offered. There must be meaningful engagement families and the community in dialogues about educational goals to build trust.

The current unit-based funding formula is focused on staffing ratios and does not address the needs of low-income, special education, or multilingual learners. In order to improve the funding we must implement a weighted student funding formula that will allocate resources based on student needs, ensuring equitable support for all. There should also be an increase in state investment in public education. This enhanced funding will address disparities and provide adequate resources for schools in communities. There also needs to be increased transparency and flexibility allowing districts to allocate resources to effectively meet student needs.
As a school board member, it is important to establish high expectations for student learning and define the measurable objects. This will help to monitor academic progress by reviewing student performance data as progress toward the goals is achieved. Another important aspect is to align resources with priorities within the district. School boards should ensure that budgets and resources are allocated to support initiatives that directly impact student learning. There should also be a commitment to continuous improvement to enhance governance skills and knowledge of best practices in education. Additionally there should be open communication with parents, teachers and community members to build support for the district goals.
