Colonial School Board - District C

*** In 2025, only one candidate has filed for this Colonial District C open seat, so no election will be held for this race. ***School boards are elected trustees who oversee the local school district and represent the community in matters affecting education. In Delaware, school board service is an unpaid position with a term of 4 years (5 years for board members elected prior to Dec 2021). School board elections are nonpartisan, and are held on the second Tuesday in May each year.Seven citizens elected by the residents of the Colonial School District serve as the Board of Education. Each board member lives in a separate election district, though all are elected at large. Terms are staggered so that normally one or two seats on the board are open each year. This seat fills the balance of an unexpired original term because of a Board member s early resignation.

I have been involved in Colonial most of my life. I graduated from Wm Penn in 1973. All 3 of my children are also Colonial alumni and college graduates. I attribute their success to the excellent education they received as well as the influence of the many role model teachers they had. I contributed to many activities and programs throughout their time at Colonial. I was on the academic achievement committee during my children's time in high school. I witnessed the challenges as well as the strong desire of the staff to truly educate. I want to make sure that is supported. Someone once said it takes a village to raise a child. I want to be a part of the village.
I think providing mental health support for both staff and students is needed.
I think the curriculum should be broad to include topics that contribute to a students knowledge to succeed in life and whatever career they choose to follow. The curriculum needs to include diverse perspectives for all students and their different identities.
I truly believe Colonial is dedicated to providing equitable care to all. I think staff should be educated to be aware of the differences across the spectrum of student populations.

There is always room for improvement. Obviously increased funding can always provide more resources. As I stated below, I strongly support a program for the academically gifted.
I would like to see the program for the academically gifted brought back. My children participated in it back in the 90's and it greatly enhanced their educational success. I think this keeps students engaged who may otherwise become bored when not challenged to perform at their actual level. Other districts do have this program and I think Colonial should have it in order to keep enrollment of this student population.
