Biographical Information

What do you consider to be the most iimportant services offered by the library?

What do you see as the role in the community for the library?

Do you believe there should be controls on which books are available in public libraries? Why or why not?

I believe the most important service the library offers is access to information. Librarians hold a masters degree focused on the organization, management, preservation, and accessibility of information resources. Our Bloomingdale librarians are the crème de la crème. I, and the trustees I serve with, pride ourselves on the caliber of director, department heads, librarians, and staff that carefully and thoughtfully curate information for our community.
Libraries are community centers where all of our members are welcome to come in and learn, participate, and share with others. The Bloomingdale Library has been a place of great joy for me since I’m moved here in 2012. Long before becoming a trustee I brought my sons, as infants, as regularly as I could, sometimes as many as 5-6 days a week. I have always felt welcome as a new mom, an individual, new to the community, and as a volunteer. The Bloomingdale Library is my favorite place to be outside of my home.
I think it is important to keep an open mind about material holdings. That includes keeping an open mind that it is possible something may come along that does not mirror the value presented in our mission statement. To this date, I have not encountered a Bloomingdale Public Library holding that I believe falls short of our mission, even though there are materials that I do not enjoy, that do not align with my personal morals, or that I find offensive. I believe it is important to provide a diverse collection as this is key to maintaining a library that is welcoming to all. Access to information grows understanding, tolerance, and enrichment serving to strengthen the fabric of our community.

The library has so many valuable and fascinating resources that perhaps the most important service it offers is a knowledgeable, well-trained, and friendly staff who can help patrons navigate the collection and connect with the materials and programs that will answer their questions and meet their needs.
The library is a community space that provides information, entertainment, and educational materials so that everyone in the community can find the resources they need to solve problems, to explore the world, to be creative, and to engage in lifelong learning. As a retired children's librarian, I am especially passionate about the library's role in supporting parents and other adults in teaching children to talk and express themselves, and in fostering a love of reading.
No library has limitless space or a limitless budget, so choices must be made on which books to include in a library collection. Trained librarians follow a Materials Selection Policy to choose books based on criteria such as quality and accuracy, and to choose books that are going to be popular with a segment of the library's patrons. But not every book will appeal to every reader. I, and the other library trustees I serve with, understand that books are powerful and that people sometimes have strong opinions about what should and should not be included in a library collection. We strive to make sure that everyone in the community will find some books they like in our library's collection, and also to protect everyone's freedom to read.

The library offers books, media, internet, resources, and community programs that inspire lifelong learning connecting people to opportunities for personal and professional growth.
The library is the heart of our community- that welcomes the entire community regardless of age, ethnicity, or social status.
The library has to be an open space to all and that’s why there should be no banning of any books.
