What are some major issues that you believe this school district is currently facing? How should the district address these issues?

What is your opinion of the level of student achievement in this district? On what do you base your assessment?

What is the current budget situation for the elementary school, and how might it impact future programming?

How do you define diversity in the context of education, and what specific actions would you take to ensure that all students, regardless of their background, feel valued, included, and supported in our school community?

I would bring 26 years of experience in education to the Roselle District 12 School Board. As a special education case manager, I have expertise in team collaboration. As an educator, I have first hand experience of what it takes to implement curriculum and policies. The best policies come from a balance of community input, thoughtful consideration of needs, research of best practices, review of existing data, and alignment with state standards. I recognize the importance of providing students with emotionally safe environments in order to learn and grow to their full potential. I am aware of how important it is for schools to nurture a culture of inclusion through belonging. Students must feel belonging before they can achieve.

I am not aware of any major issues that are not being managed by the administration. I do know that during this next term the school board will be tasked with hiring a new superintendent. When making big decisions like the hiring of a superintendent, I believe it is important that all members have a voice. The Roselle District 12 community is comprised of community members, D12 families, D12 students, and D12 school faculty and staff. It is important that all voices in our Roselle District 12 community are represented when making major educational and administrative decisions. I understand that the board will work with a hiring agency to collet District 12 community feedback and select high quality applicants for the interview process.
I feel that there are a lot of ways to measure achievement. standardized test scores from IAR and regular progress monitoring with i-Ready are a couple of ways that District 12 measures student achievement. At the most recent District 12 School Board meeting there was a proposal for the upcoming summer school program. It is a unique plan to provide high interest educational opportunities to the district's students that have not made adequate progress toward reaching grade level on i-Ready. Spring Hills School is providing enrichment opportunities during the school year for students as well.
It is my understanding that District 12 is operating with a balanced budget and stable fund balance. District 12 hires a Chief School Business Official to help manage the finances of the district.
Diversity is the unique make up of a group. It is the responsibility of a school district to ensure that all students have a sense of dignity, self-respect and pride, that comes from their uniqueness being valued. Students need to feel that they belong. Students can't achieve to their fullest, if they do not feel they belong. I think it is important for schools to constantly assess how valued and connected their students feel, identify the strengths and weaknesses, and make an action plan to for improvement on a regular basis.
