For the last 15 years I have worked as a Logistics Manager for an international paper company. My day to day includes overseeing multiple employees, managing the production of two manufacturing facilities, and maintaining relationships with other facilities, vendors, and customers across the United States. Establishing clear and open communication with various groups and individuals, coming up with resolutions to complex situations, and understanding strategic planning are skills that can be brought to the school board. I was appointed a seat on the board in September of 2024 and since then have brought not only my corporate experience to the table but also my parental experience which I have found to be just as important.
I believe District 20 is facing some of the same issues we see in other districts including chronic absenteeism, students facing homelessness, the amount of time spent preparing and taking tests to collect data points, and the recruitment and retention of qualified teachers and staff. The district is currently addressing these with their Strategic Plan that looks at teaching and learning, culture, and community engagement. The board is continuously engaging with members of the district and families to gauge the overall response to the initiatives being put in place and making any needed adjustments.
Student achievement is typically based on test scores and grades but the students in D20 bring far more to the table. Each year students in grades 4-8 are nominated by staff or faculty to receive the Ignite Award. This award goes to students that go above and beyond in and outside of the classroom, who demonstrate excellent social emotional competencies, and those that participate and excel in co-curricular and athletic programs. I had the honor of participating in this year’s awards and watching students accept their awards in front of their proud families was a phenomenal experience. These kids are the future, they are leaders, and examples of the successes being built within the district!
We are very lucky to have a fiscally responsible district that is managing its budget to ensure the students can receive the resources needed to be successful. Budgets numbers are discussed at the monthly meetings and for full transparency are posted for the residents in Keeneyville to review on the district website. Looking into the future with so much uncertainty surrounding education the school board will take the necessary time to review all programs and spending to ensure that funds are being allocated properly.
Diversity in education means inclusivity and developing a culture where all students can learn within a safe and understanding environment. Every student that comes through the door has their own individual experience and learning style and has the right to learn in a place where they feel respected and appreciated. My oldest son is a graduate of D20 and is a member of the Special Needs community, the inclusivity and support he received there was life changing and I plan to dedicate my term on the school board to ensuring others receive that same experience.
