The members of a City Council supervise the city departments, either directly or through a city manager or administrator. City Councilors pass laws, set policy, decide which services will be provided, and develop budgets; they negotiate work contracts and make hiring and firing decisions. A city officer must be a qualified elector under the state constitution who has resided in the city before being elected for a period of time that is specified in the city charter.Cannon Beach City Councilors are elected at large. Voters are asked to vote for a number of candidates equal to the number of open seats. They serve for a 4-year term (unless they are filling out a partial term) and are elected on a nonpartisan basis. In most cities, the City Councilors are unpaid.

We have an impressive list of needs, affordable housing, the proliferation of vacant homes, disappearance of vistas, green space, and historic cottages, traffic and parking congestion, and strains on our infrastructure. They’re not insurmountable, provided we keep our focus on the attributes of our community that make it unique.
My priorities as City Councilor will be:
• Updating our zoning ordinance to protect our environment while managing growth;
• Adopting housing policies incentivizing workforce and middle housing;
• Exploring options in Transportation System Plan to fund solutions to congestion and parking; and
• Conduction oversight of construction projects, the new city hall and police station.
Little is accomplished in our City unless citizens take an active interest in governance, attending meetings, petitioning their elected officials, and serving on ad hoc committees. The duties of City Councilor that most excite me are the ability to get to know the citizens of our community as they engage in government, all of them, not just those with whom I interact on a daily basis, to understand their needs and concerns, and to help shape those needs and concerns into effective policy.
We have critical infrastructure needs in the supply of potable water, both in terms of demand and resilience. Our public works department is working diligently to address resilience, and the best thing I can do at this point is to ensure they have the support and the funding to protect our supply using traditional revenue sources.
The volume of visitors to our city places a strain on our infrastructure during peak season, water as well as the basic transportation systems. As City Councilor, I hope to open the Transportation System Plan adopted in 2022 for sources of funding, state and federal, to improve parking and reduce congestion. The objective should be to give visitors a better experience, not encourage more visitors.

Town Where You Live
Cannon Beach
Cannon Beach along with the rest of the country is facing a major housing crisis. I am currently on a local housing task force that is looking at our city code and how we can make changes to encourage more attainable housing to be constructed, along with looking at how we can possibly use other regional tools at our disposal to bring much needed workforce, and affordable housing to Cannon Beach. All of these changes need to be implemented quickly but thoughtfully as Cannon Beach has an environmental appeal as well as a overall aesthetic charm that are a big part of our tourism economy.
I would like to have the opportunity to provide a voice for those in our community that have not felt they have been heard. Those of us working in the tourism economy, and those of us of a younger generation have occasionally provided input to the council and felt as though our concerns have been ignored. I want to be a voice for a larger portion of our community than has been represented to date.
Cannon Beach is currently undergoing a water resiliency project which aims to bring some portions of our water distribution system up to current seismic standards, funding for this has been shifted onto the yearly water rate increases that the city council has forecast. Much of this funding could be provided by emergency management grants for rural communities. Additionally the city council voted on a TSP 2 years ago and has not begun to implement a single project or suggestion from that plan. These could be grant funded or from existing revenues and reserves, I would like to see the traffic flow and traffic congestion problems brought back to the table and thoughtfully discussed as that has a direct impact on livability in Cannon Beach.
