City of Rockaway Beach Councilor Position 3
The members of a City Council supervise the city departments, either directly or through a city manager or administrator. City Councilors pass laws, set policy, decide which services will be provided, and develop budgets; they negotiate work contracts and make hiring and firing decisions. A city officer must be a qualified elector under the state constitution who has resided in the city before being elected for a period of time that is specified in the city charter. In most cities, the City Councilors are unpaid.Rockaway Beach City Councilors are elected by numbered position. They serve for a 4-year term (unless they are filling out a partial term) and are elected on a nonpartisan basis.

The most urgent need in Rockaway today is to bring people together to build community. It feels like there are "sides" today in Rockaway and sometimes, especially lately, we struggle to listen to one another. I want to work as your councilor to really hear each of our citizens, understand challenges, and look for the root cause of problems so we can find common ground and solutions. The council should always prioritize true citizen input and ensure key decisions leave time for input before decisions are made.
I love budgeting and finance, and I am very much looking forward to helping our community understand how our city spends its money. I enjoy the process of breaking things down and making complicated budgets understandable. One area that I was responsible for at OHSU had a budget of $4M per month. I put together regular financial presentations for my non-finance colleagues to explain things in a way that was understandable. This leads to better transparency and engagement, enabling everyone to contribute ideas on how to be more efficient and spend funds wisely.
Emergency preparedness is one of the most important needs we have in Rockaway Beach today. Continued support of the Fire Department's work with engaged volunteers should be one of our top priorities. In order to maintain funding, we need to ensure TRT (Transient Room Tax) funds are being used for infrastructure that supports visitors whenever possible, including during a potential disaster. This will ensure our community is prepared for an emergency no matter what season it is or how many people are in town.
