Biographical Information

What is your stance on access to abortion?

What will you do to address the high cost of living and depressed wages for your constituents, including for families, people with disabilities, and people that are economically disadvantaged?

What proposals will you support to curb gun violence and build safe and healthy communities for communities disproportionally impacted by gun violence in our state?

What measures do you support to improve and secure elections and voting access in our state?

What actions will you take to address the threats facing our state due to climate change?

I support a woman's right to control her body and support reproductive rights. I believe the standard Roe v. Wade set is the correct one.
I support increasing the minimum wage to at least $15 and indexing future increases to the comsumer price index. I support programs to subsidize child care fees and wages for child care workers. I also support plans to increase the supply of affordable housing, including upgrades to existing, substandard housing.
I support background checks and limits on ownership and possession to keep guns from those with a history of domestic abuse and violent crime. I support red flag laws, with avenues for appeal, to keep guns from mentally disturbed people. I support a ban on assault rifles for private ownership. I also would support voluntary gun buyback programs to cut the number of weapons our our streets.
Voter access in Iowa is good, with same-day registration and other measures, but could be better. The window for receiving and mailing absentee ballots should be extended. Ballots postmarked by election day should be counted even if received after the polls close, as was the case before. I believe people would have more faith in our elections if they served as precinct election officials, as I have. Perhaps county auditors could post explanatory videos on social media and websites or invite the public to witness demonstrations of how PEOs process votes, showing the safeguards in place, and how ballots are handled.
Iowa should strive to have carbon neutral energy within a few years. We are nearly halfway there. I support closing coal-fired and, eventually, gas-fired power plants and erecting more solar farms. An acre of solar panels produces 100 times more energy than an acre of corn converted to ethanol without the negative environmental impacts. That also means farmers could reap greater profits from solar, especially when the land under panels is planted to appropriate crops. In the short run, we should look at remediation: revising floodplain maps to ensure endangered property is moved or fortified; rewriting building codes to ensure new construction withstands more extreme weather; encouraging water conservation to weather drought.
