I have previous experience serving on boards, including the Fremont County Group Homes Board, during which time I helped write and update many new and updated policies. I also worked at the district from 2019-2023 as the Special Education Administrative Assistant so I am already familiar with the culture of the school and its day-to-day operations. I am running for school board because I care passionately about the district's schools, staff and students. I want every child in our community to get an outstanding education as I firmly believe it is the key to success in life,
I do not plan to be on the board to make big changes right away. Instead, I believe the best thing I can do is be receptive and responsive to all students, parents, staff and the community at large. I know it is important the board hears input from all groups and carefully weighs all the facts before making any decision. I especially want to make sure the voices of those students who struggle in schools and on standardized tests are heard as I believe that is the most effective way to create an equitable, quality education for all.
I believe the district already does an excellent job of identifying those students at risk for dropping out and taking action before it's too late. As a school board member, my job will be to make sure staff have the support and resources they need to continue this trend. However, one way I think the school district can better prepare all students for their future is by putting more emphasis on digital literacy skills. If elected, this is an area I would like to focus on as I believe it is vital to the success of individual students as well as society as a whole.
I see AI being used by schools to increase efficiency in areas such as lesson planning, giving assessments, and for data analysis. It should also be incorporated into the class curriculum to prepare students for a world with AI after graduation. However, AI usage comes with issues that schools must address in order to effectively and responsibly implement it. One way the school board can help is to provide guidelines for its ethical use to ensure it is being used as a tool for learning rather than for cheating or just as a shortcut.
All school districts are currently facing a staffing crisis and, while it may be a national issue, I believe there are things the board can look into to help their districts recruit and retain quality teachers and staff. Of course funding is always a big issue, and its becoming bigger in recent years as state legislators look for ways to slash budgets in all areas including education. To help address this, school board members should be advocates for their district while working in advance to establish its funding priorities in the event cuts have to be made.
