Brief Intro - 250 characters
Husband, Father, Grandfather, Service Disabled Veteran, Small Business Owner, Educator/Professor. I was married in Spartanburg and throughout my military and professional career have seen Spartanburg grow and prosper. A trend I will continue.
First, I am a grandfather, father, veteran, small business owner, and professor. But what qualified me for office is that I am listener and a doer. The challenge of the last 24 years is the complacency of the rulers such that listening to the elected is no longer a priority. It is for me. When overseas, I was responsible for bringing peace to war-torn nation -- yes, we had guns to keep the peace, but my soldiers and I found out that by going out and listening to the people, meeting their needs, the peace came easier and we were able to begin people talking that had formerly fought each other. We need more leaders to listen and then do. The two things go together -- I listen to what people need and then I make them happen.
We need a free, smart, and strong South Caroline. Free means we allow citizens the opportunity and the right to speak up and hold leaders accountable. When elected, I will be transparent as possible in my actions and I expect to be held accountable -- that leads to trust, which leads to better government. Being smart in SC means putting students in the center of the education and development conversation, not pitting parents against teachers and administrators. We have 1.3B dollars available in SC and I vote we use that to support our students and educators. A strong SC has businesses that increase engagement and productivity by providing better education and child-parent-health care to workers. The workforce cares when leaders care.
First, I will make sure to have town halls every 6 weeks within the district. I will bring people in Columbia down to Spartanburg to answer key questions.
Second, I will work to make the county delegation an active body for all voters, not just those of one party.
Third, I will open an office of volunteers, in the district, at my own expense, dedicated to addressing the issues of voters. Right now there are no incorporated areas in this district, and it encompasses over 60% of the land area of Spartanburg County. It is the poorest and most forgotten part of the county and I will seek to do everything to make sure the voters are heard in the 33d District.
