Women should have safe, legal access to abortion. Iowa should return to the Roe v. Wade rules that held for half a century. Beyond the issue of abortion is access to healthcare in Iowa that recent legislation is seriously restricting and making it difficult to recruit medical professionals to the state.
Efforts should involve raising pay and lessening monopolistic corporate power that tends to inflate prices. Iowa should remove rules that discourage formation of unions and restore collective bargaining. Tax breaks shouldn't favor high earners. Current corporate tax incentives should be re-examined to determine whether they benefit average Iowans - many do not. Increased local control would enable localities to set minimum wages. Anything that could reduce vertical integration of food production monopolies would raise pay for workers.
I'd support raising age limits for gun buyers; prohibit sale of automatic weapons; institute red flag laws which have been proven effective in other states; increase accessibility to quality mental health services in schools and communities; mandatory background checks for gun purchases; mandatory gun safety training.
Our elections systems are already very secure but I would increase access. I'd be in favor of: enabling and encouraging as many people as possible to vote by mail; increasing the number of vote drop boxes available in each county; making ballot initiatives legal in Iowa would help expand voter power.
There should be state investment in renewable energy and tax breaks for homeowners and companies who lessen their energy consumption. The state should help all cities be as ready as possible for major weather events; enforce building codes and erosion control measures. (The devastating damage suffered recently by North Carolina residents could have been much less if state legislators had not repeatedly weakened building regulations in response to lobbying by construction groups looking to maximize profit.)
