Personal Biography My name is Dan Johnson and I am running for the Kansas House of Representatives 96th district. I am a lifelong South Wichitan and a Democrat who believes in the rights of all our citizens. I have spent my career helping those in need including alcoholics and drug addicted persons, juvenile offenders and many years working at the Department for Children and Families providing services including commodity distribution to feed our most vulnerable residents.
Education I grew up in generational poverty. Poor people have poor ways, but I was determined to have a different life. I learned there are different rules and values in every economic class of people. It was apparent that I did not know or understand the "rules" outside of generation poverty. As in many generational poverty homes, education in my house was not valued. Both of my parents only had an 8th grade education. However, my father taught me a strong work ethic and I was determined to have a better life. After dropping out of school I later earned my GED and went on to take college courses. I am very proud that with the support of mentors I climbed out of poverty, became self-sufficient and fulfilled the American dream. For many years I had the opportunity to teach and mentor others from generational poverty. For me, those opportunities are much more significant than having financial wealth. I will never be wealthy financially, but I find my riches in serving others.
Community/Public Service former member of the District 3 Advisory Board, member of the Southwest Neighborhood Association, Red Cross Volunteer, Native American Coalition
I am 100% committed to improving the lives of all Kansans. My entire career has been in social services and serving Kansas families, so I know first hand the struggles that they face on a daily basis. I have worked for County and State government so I have a working understanding of how legislation impacts our residents. I believe I am the best candidate due to the issues I am committed to fight for: Property tax relief; Medicaid expansion; Women's medical rights; school funding; capping interest charged by predatory lending; mental health; protecting the rights of all citizens regardless of gender, race, ethnicity or sexual preference; legalizing medical marijuana; animal welfare and addressing homelessness in a meaningful way.
Medicaid expansion -- healthcare should be a right and not a privilege in Kansas. This will require bipartisan support and I am more than willing to work with Republicans on any issue that benefits Kansans. Partisan politics hurt Kansans and diminish quality of life. Women's medical rights. All human beings should have the right and freedom to make their own decisions. In order to pass legislation related to these critical items we must overcome the supermajority that Republicans currently hold in the House of Representatives. With a more level playing field it would be easier for Democrats and Republicans to collaborate for the good of Kansans. Public funds for public schools. No to vouchers. Fully fund our education system in Kansas.
Communication is critical. I plan on doing an electronic newsletter and utilizing social media to keep my constituents informed. I also believe in responding promptly to every inquiry that I receive. As for Gut and Go, if given the opportunity I would vote to eliminate this process. It is not transparent and is an example of government at its worst.
I am okay with the current process, but I absolutely will not support legislation that further restricts our citizens' ability to vote and have their voices heard.
