Personal Biography
I was born in Parsons, KS and moved to Columbus at age four where I attended schools K-12. I married Steve Jarrett in 1988 and together we have three grown children and 7 grandchildren. Today I am a retired teacher, a small business owner and a farmer's wife.
Education
Columbus Unified HS 1977, Pittsburg State University BA 1996, Univeristy of Missouri Columbia, MA 1998
Community/Public Service
Sponsored many youth organizations and teams over the years. Member of Hospital Volunteers of Kansas and currently serve as President of the Columbus Mercy Hospital Auxiliary.
I served 13 years as a group home assistant director, four years as a skilled nursing facility administrator, and 15 years teaching in various classrooms from Special Education to college writing courses, all while raising three children and assisting my husband on our family farm. I know first hand what it means to live in rural Kansas and I am trained in critical thinking and analysis of complex issues. As a result, I refuse to play polarized politics and I pledge to be the candidate who is neither red nor blue, but PURPLE, like most Kansans. Without common sense communication and empathy, we get nowhere. I love Kansas and I love people. I want to do my part to #PaintItPurple.
Equality, Medicaid Expansion, Affordable and accessible health care for ALL (including women's choice), and public school funding. Okay, that's four, but I can't cut any of these.
I suspect that many legislators don't actually read what they are voting for and they vote according to party lines. I am different. I'm tired of the shell games (gut and go) they play with important issues and I will try to communicate honest, easier to read updates on bills as they flow through the legislature. I believe it is my job to listen and provide updates to all of my constituents, then vote accordingly.
The only changes to election laws that I would support involve making it easier for all citizens to vote, including those who are non-native speakers and readers. I do not believe our elections have been unfair except for perhaps gerrymandering and attempts to squelch minority voters. I will resist the urge to have knee-jerk reactions to extremist propaganda.
