I earned an undergraduate degree in criminal justice and have long been interested in achieving societal justice. My work experience as a court clerk taught me much about not only how our system works, but also how to interact with all participants, including attorneys, judges, and self-represented persons. My work as a lawyer representing litigants gave me important perspectives into the needs of litigants, and my work as a judicial lawyer showed me how I would like to act as a judge. All of these experiences together help to make me a better, more responsive, and empathetic judge.
The law is the law, whether written by our Legislature or set by Supreme Court precedent. My job is simply to apply that law as written, regardless of any personal beliefs, and I endeavor to approach every matter from a neutral perspective. Under Kansas law, we hope that our laws are written in such a way that this balance--justice versus the rights of the accused--is built into our system, and if we follow the law, we will likewise achieve this balance.
