How do you plan to address the challenges of funding, teacher recruitment and retention, and ensuring educational equity across remote, rural and urban communities in Alaska in order to improve overall educational outcomes?
According to the U.S. Energy Administration in 2023, Alaska generated about 25% of its total electricity from renewable energy sources. What other alternatives do you think would help with our energy issues?
What options would you suggest where Alaska can increase our state revenue?
What could the Alaska legislature do to help restore voters’ trust in the integrity of our elections system?
Do you support or oppose continuation of our current open primary/ ranked choice voting election system. Why?

It starts with a real increase in the BSA, with an automatic inflation adjustment going forward. Second, we must reinstate a defined benefit retirement program for teachers. We want to offer the best package possible to compete with what other employers offer. Finally, we need an overarching set of standards for what is considered Alaska’s acceptable level of education.
That will require a statute that sets the maximum number of children per teacher allowed in our schools, with the number based on grade-level best practices. The BSA will likely need to be increased again to meet the staffing levels needed to
reach the number of high quality teachers required to attain an adequate education system throughout Alaska.
I believe we should utilize an “all-of-the-above” strategy for future electrical
generation that focuses on accelerating renewable energy projects. Alaska
should invest in a large hydroelectric project for the Railbelt. Until I am convinced
otherwise, I believe that project should be a version of the Susitna Dam project.
Alaska must get its fiscal house in order, adding revenue from a combination of a
more rational oil and gas production tax system as well as a modest broad-based
tax that protects the lowest income families, grows the middle class, and shares
the burden with Alaska visitors and out-of-state workers.
I believe that recent voter turnout in Alaska has been so low in part because
people are unaware of upcoming elections and how/where to vote. The full mail-in
vote conducted by the Municipality of Anchorage has shown the success that
comes from making voting easier. The problem is that voters in Anchorage now
expect to see the ballot arrive in their mail, but they don’t realize that State
elections require them to fill out an Absentee Ballot application to receive a ballot
in the mail. That’s why I am putting a tremendous amount of time educating
voters and getting folks signed up for Absentee Ballots. This is an effort that the
State Division of Elections should join with gusto and a robust budget.
I support the continuation of our current open primary and ranked choice voting
because it helps combat hyper-partisanship by ensuring that legislators connect
with all voters, not just those who vote in their party’s primary.
