Current Job Attorney
For 18 years, I’ve been working alongside the community as a public advocate, an immigration attorney, and a gun violence prevention activist. I’ve fought for people’s rights, advocated for systemic reforms, and worked for commonsense gun laws. I have a deep knowledge of the issues we face as a result of my work, and I have spent years analyzing policy and its impacts. I have experience negotiating and collaborating with others on cases and projects that require years of focus. Doing this work has prepared me to work through systems to get things done. Being a lawyer, like being a council person, is a customer service job in many ways. It requires you to be responsive, be a good listener, and build trust with individuals and the community.
A council person has to address many issues at the same time, and we certainly face lots of challenges that require attention. But if I had to choose one, it would be to address housing and shelter. We do not have enough affordable housing or shelter space. My plan is to explore neighborhood-tailored strategies for supporting affordable housing and ensuring the Louisville Affordable Housing Trust Fund continues to be funded. I also want to ensure we have enough shelter space for every person who needs it and that we have the kind of shelter space that meets people's needs. That includes shelter where people can stay with their partners and pets, store belongings, and receive any needed wrap-around services.
On my campaign logo, the green top of the “T” in my name symbolizes my commitment to building community. Community building is part of how we reach our policy goals. I plan to increase community engagement through youth assemblies and creating the District 6 Advisory Council. Our city was divided and West End neighborhoods were economically harmed as a result of intentional policies. We have to be intentional about mending that harm. Elected officials have a responsibility to acknowledge the existence of generational harms to the Black community, including the history and current impacts, including in environmental justice, housing, police misconduct, and education. We address those harms through thoughtful and carefully legislation.
Metro Council members should make themselves accessible to the public by attending community meetings, hosting events for the public, and providing responsive communication. They should be prepared to discuss projects and answer questions. They should communicate clearly and regularly about their work through their websites and newsletters. Information about legislation and expenditures of public money should be accessible and easy to find on their website.
Gun violence is an issue that is personal to my family, like so many other families across this city who have been directly impacted. My husband is a gun violence survivor, and my family has volunteered with Moms Demand Action for the past six years. We go to Frankfort every year to advocate for commonsense gun safety legislation because too many people have lost a loved one, live with mental and physical impacts each day as a survivor, support a survivor, or experience worry about future gun violence. Expanding public health solutions to gun violence is key to peace, community safety, and healing. I am in favor of commonsense gun safety solutions at the local level and plan to continue working collaboratively for solutions in Frankfort.
As a proud JCPS parent, a product of public education from kindergarten through law school, and a former SBDM parent representative, I will champion measures on Metro Council that support public education, teachers, students, and families. I believe that Metro Government and JCPS both have important roles to play when it comes to nurturing and protecting our young people. This includes supporting the Evolve502 scholarship. I want to explore ways we can work with JCPS to move toward a community schools model by streamlining city services and increasing wrap-around support for students and their families. I want to ensure that resources are equitably distributed, especially in areas that have historically lacked investment.
