Johnson County Commissioner, District 3

The Board of County Commissioners comprises three members, each elected county-wide. The Board serves as the executive body of the county. Commissioners are responsible for county buildings, lands, and property. In addition, the Board audits and authorizes claims against the county, receives bids and authorizes contracts, supervises many county departments, oversees construction and maintenance of roads and bridges, and exercises many of the legislative powers and duties of the county. Commissioners serve four-year terms. Adapted from https://co.johnson.in.us/commissioners/.

We need to improve our roads, streets, highways and intersections throughout the county. With the construction of I-69, there is increased need to have better east-west and north-south roads, especially in the northern part of the county. SR 135, for example, has been turned into a series of stoplights which inhibits traffic flow, wastes fuel and causes more accidents. Adding more traffic lights does not solve the problem. Similar problems exist in other areas of the county. We also need to do a better job of promoting sanitary sewers in under- or non-served areas of the county. This is going to be especially important along the I-69 corridor as it is developed, but it exists along I-65 and other developing areas of the county.

I support affordable housing. "Quality" affordable housing can best be delivered by allowing the market to work. The government should develop a comprehensive plan, establish appropriate zoning and get out of the way. Johnson County is one of the best places to live, work and raise a family. We need to keep it that way by keeping high standards when it comes to housing and other construction.
You balance interests by developing a solid comprehensive plan and utilizing it. The plan should balance the needs and interests of rural, urban, suburban and other citizens. In developing the plan, you secure input from citizens, then work with government to pass reasonable zoning law that follows, with few exceptions, the comprehensive plan. This is an ongoing process and not one that is stationary, The comprehensive plan should be reviewed regularly, referenced in decision-making and not placed on a shelf to attract dust.

I serve on the Planning and Zoning commission, we are sensitive to the adjacent property owners and at the same time understanding of an individual's right to do with their property as best suits them as long as it is not a detriment to adjacent property owners.
