Indiana State Senate District 37

The Indiana State Senate is the upper chamber of the Indiana General Assembly. The Senate and House of Representatives constitute the legislative branch of the Indiana state government, and they collaborate with the governor of Indiana to create laws and establish a state budget. Legislative authority and responsibilities of the Indiana State Senate include passing bills on public policy matters, setting levels for state spending, raising and lowering taxes, and voting to uphold or override gubernatorial vetoes. State senators serve four-year terms. Adapted from https://ballotpedia.org/Indiana_State_Senate and https://iga.in.gov/information/about.

What measures, if any, will you take to expand voting rights in Indiana?

Does Indiana need a state-wide plan to address climate issues affecting agriculture, industry, and families? If so, what should the key elements of the plan cover?

Would you support legislation and funding that supports statewide regional water study and planning?

What will you do to enable public schools in Indiana to be, or continue to be, successful?

How do you plan to ensure transparency and accountability in your decision-making process as a member of the State Senate?

The biggest expansion of voting rights would be to make certain our elections are fair and secure and to make Election Day a statewide holiday. I will support making elections secure with single-day, in-person paper ballots with government-issued ID which matches voter file. I would also support accommodations for members of military and disabled voters.
If evidence proved that climate issues were negatively affecting agriculture, industry and families in such a way that having a state-wide plan would relieve the negative impact on people, then I would of course support such a plan. I do not believe such evidence exists.
If there’s clear evidence that a study is necessary, yes.
I would encourage more competition in the education industry and reward teachers more fairly for their efforts. I would support performance based pay for educators and encourage educators, not legislators, to design a competitive performance evaluation process. I would strongly support cutting costs in school construction and reallocate the funding towards rewarding teachers more fairly and hiring more great teachers. I would support better teacher preparation programs, and provide more resources to support science based reading.
The number one way to ensure transparency and accountability as a legislator is to spend a lot of time in the district with constituents. Another great way to ensure these things is to make certain the legislative process takes place in plain view of the public and not in closed door meetings. The public has a right to know what their representatives are supporting, not supporting, and negotiating. This is why I support term limits for committee chairs in the Indiana General Assembly and will be a strong supporter of roll call votes.
