The greatest need/challenge facing the township is economic development. For a number of years tax revenues received in the Trustee’s office have been relatively stagnant while the need of the citizens has grown conservatively three or more percent in recent years. The Township should consider a partnership with the city of Indianapolis and the state of Indiana to bring in various types of industry to increase the tax base. These need to be medium to high salary positions.
Food deserts are a major issue in Wayne Township. An estimated 10% or more of the citizens in the township live in a food desert. It is extremely important that all of the citizens have ready access to healthy and affordable food. This could be accomplished by partnering with traditional grocery outlets, micro-food outlets and mobile markets.
I believe the Preamble to the Declaration of Independence says it best: "We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness." Some of the ways the Trustee’s office can accomplish this is to: -sponsor a college day to showcase the educational opportunities in Wayne Township and central Indiana -sponsor a job fair -partner with AmeriCorps
The Board’s role in supporting the local economy is extremely important, such as: 1. Publically promoting, whenever possible, the businesses in the township 2. Using and purchasing the goods and services available in the township for the operation of the Trustees’ office 3. Implement a “small business” day in the township to showcase the goods and services available to the citizens of the community.
