Public safety continues to be a top issue for me. We have to keep violent criminals off of our streets. I was proud to sponsor a bill that limited the pre-trial release of violent criminals with a Class-A misdemeanor (HB 2135). I'm happy that we were able to undo some of the disasters that Measure 110 caused but more needs to be done. Increasing penalties for drug dealers who sell hard drugs on our street corners will be one of my top priorities. Our kids deserve to feel safe when they attend school. I was proud to sponsor bills that would have made our schools safer by funding School Resource Officers (HB 2223) and studying the cost of installing single points of entry in public schools (HB 3261).
I worked hard to improve the quality of Oregon's K-12 schools after I was elected. I fought for school choice by introducing a bill (HB 2557) that would have removed the cap on virtual charter schools. I worked on increasing teacher salaries by introducing a historic education budget (HB 3627). We should expect more from our high school students rather than lowering the bar just so that they can graduate, that's why I introduced a bill (HB 3184) that would have reinstated graduation requirements
Life has become unaffordable for everyday Oregonians because of years of extreme, Democrat leadership. The city of Salem recently attempted to pass a payroll tax for Salem workers even when they had record-breaking revenues. I will work to pass a bill that prevents local governments from implementing similar payroll taxes that hurt working families and small businesses the most. I will also strongly oppose any new or increased taxes proposed in the legislature. Finally, because working families rely on their kicker refunds to make ends meet, I will oppose any effort to take away or reduce your hard-earned kicker refund.
