San Miguel County Commissioner District 4
Together with other members of the County Commission, represents the County and its interests in all case not otherwise provided for by law. Appoints elections officials to fill vacancies. The Commission is responsible for the County budget, County ordinances and resolutions, and zoning and business regulation in unincorporated areas, and sets policy for the operations of County government. Must be at least 18 years of age and a resident of district from which elected. Four-year term, no more than two terms in succession.Note: The district map we have available for this race is inexact. I have acquired the knowledge and experience while in office to do a good job. I work closely with my fellow commissioners to form a team effort to do what is best for the residents of San Miguel County. Together we have made a positive difference, even at worst of times, (COVID, Calf Canyon/Hermits Peak Fire, Floods) in serving our communities always keeping our citizens our number one priority.
One of our biggest challenges is the drug and alcohol addiction in our county. We have lost too many lives of good people that have developed addiction. We do not have a treatment center to assist with the problem.
The county spent a whole lot of money and invested time and material during and after the fire and floods.
I have been instrumental in lobbying with our state legislators and congressional delegation to secure over 9M dollars for a drug/alcohol treatment facility. We are now getting close to the final phases of opening the doors to a 28 bed facility for females and males. It will fave a full sustained kitchen and an area for detox. It will be a regional center to help our neighbors out of San Miguel County as well.
I supported to contract services to navigate claims with FEMA. So far assessed damages and already approved, are at a tentative budget of 60M dollars. We are starting to rebuild and invest in equipment as well as reimburse our workers for time spent during the most destructive wildfire in the history of New Mexico.
The county should continue to promote economic development with our local chamber of commerce. Tourism in San Miguel County is one of our main contributors to the economy. Offering good paying jobs through employment with the county has been one of our accomplishments. My fellow commissioners and I have approved 1.5M dollars in raises for county employees during my tenure.
Water is precious. Everyone has heard that “Agua Es Vida” (water is life). No water, no life. Promoting the conservation of water is essential. Especially during the dry, drought months. I would say the best way to balance the growth with water scarcity is educate the public of how important it is to not waste water. To reward those that practice water conservation, and to penalize those that waste water would be an idea to implement throughout the county.
