Occupation self-employed
My family has been in agriculture in Eastern NM for three generations. As a farmer’s son, I’ve learned to tackle all types of projects. Besides agriculture, I have worked in electrical and construction. During my lifetime, I’ve worked for small businesses and large and have handled budgets from 18 - 30 million dollars. I have had a varied career from laborer to boss; from single employee to a large workforce; from staying on budget, to creating a budget; from self-employed to government contractor. I have always learned and adapted on every job. I enjoy a challenge and am able to bring different people together on projects and incorporate their input and perspective.
Colfax County is diverse in population; in landscape and economic opportunities. Currently, tourism and agriculture are the main, consistent drivers of our economy. I see two large challenges: first, maintaining the economy we have and second, developing or sourcing new economic revenue streams.
The biggest tourism draw is our natural resources. To maintain our economy, it is vital for the Colfax County Commission to take an active role in promotion of our natural resources. This would entail a cooperative working relationship with the state-with the Energy, Minerals & Natural Resources Dept, with the Dept of Game & Fish; with the non-profits in our county that depend on natural resource use and with the business owners of our county who depend on and support the tourist industry. The agriculture industry is a centuries old economic source for Colfax County. Again, it is vital for the Colfax County Commission to support the ag producers in anyway necessary, including but not limited to water usage and wildfire protection.
The county commission can support economic development by restraining government regulation of the local business owners and protect the same from state and federal overreach. The county commission needs to work together as a commission and needs to assist all industry in Colfax County to work together in increasing economic development.
"The State Engineer has authority over the supervision, measurement, appropriation, and distribution of all surface and groundwater in New Mexico, including streams and rivers that cross state boundaries". ( Colfax County Commissioners need to work along side the Office of the State Engineer in promoting common sense use of water resources for the citizens of Colfax County and for the tourists visting our county.
