My top priorities are healthcare, environmental issues, education and workers’ rights. Healthcare is universal right and every Ohioan should have access to quality care regardless of their economic situation. Pre-and-post natal care is critical; Ohio is 42d in the nation is infant mortality. Ohio should halt its policy to allow fracking on public land as it a major methane polluter. It must also repeal legislation to penalize the sale and use of electric vehicles. Public education is a fundamental right and funding must be increased to attract quality and certified teachers. Ohio must invest in its workers; $10.45 is not a livable wage. Workers are also entitled to a decent leave policy to include maternity/paternity leave.
Elections must be available to all. To accommodate all Ohioans, early and absentee voting must be an available option. A valid identification card, issued by a recognized institution (DMV, University) should be sufficient. Multiple voting locations should be available based on staffing capabilities. I oppose any additional restrictions on voting accessibility to include automatically dropping voters from the roles without first informing them of the pending action.
A living wage would be a first start in attracting workers to Ohio. Also, a welcoming government whose rhetoric does not discriminate against the LGTBQ community would entice new talent. Ensuring reproductive rights for women, to include access to contraceptives, would attract young couples, and removing threats of litigation regarding abortion procedures would stem the departure of desperately needed medical professionals. The recent recommendation to end the Ohio income tax as an incentive to attract business must include options to offset the huge budget deficit it will incur; otherwise it will be perceived as a pander to the wealthy at the expense of lower income families who do not pay significant income tax on their earnings.
Higher wages for certified teachers will ensure quality education for all grades. I strongly support increased emphasis on trade schools for those who do not aspire to college. I would propose bringing back trade classes in the high schools and outreach to various trade union shops for apprentice positions. Junior colleges should be free for those who qualify based on a standardized test normalized for gender and cultural differences. I am not in favor of school vouchers if the monies detract in any way from public education funding.
Local governments should be free to legislate their own regulations as long as they align with state policies. Each township, town, city should be required to submit an annual report of its implemented policies and anticipated future efforts for review by an independent state-level oversight board.
Healthcare is a universal right, with emphasis on pre-and-post natal care. "Medicare For All" funded by insurance companies and matching state funds paid for through a modest tax increase based on income. All employers with more than 25 employees (currently 50) should be required to provide health care benefits regardless of the number of hours the employee worked per week/month. Any legislation denying any health care to a specific group should be immediately rescinded. Health care is a decision made by the individual and/or guardian and professional medical personnel, not legislators or insurance representatives.
Fossil fuels should be phased out with increased state support for renewable energy, to include tax incentives for solar panels and wind. Fracking should not be allowed on state-owned property to include parks. Improved public transportation and use of green spaces/walking malls in towns and cities to discourage automobile traffic should be encouraged throughout the state. Rescind current legislation penalizing automobile dealerships for EV sales.
Individual Ohioans should have the ability to solicit redress for perceived discrimination. The Attorney General should empanel a group of professionals to review all cases presented; if discrimination is determined violators (both individual and corporate) should be held pecuniarily liable for damages as determined by a court of competent jurisdiction. Any legislation which singles out a protected class and denies them access to any services should be eliminated, to include the recent override of the Governor's veto of HB 68 denying health care for transgender youths. Any licensed business owners should not be able to discriminate against any persons due to their personal religious or political beliefs.
