As Sheriff, my role is to ensure the safety and security of all Denton County residents. I believe in upholding laws with compassion and fairness. My office will work within the legal framework, prioritizing public safety while respecting the dignity and rights of every individual. We will focus on serious crimes and work collaboratively with federal agencies as required by law, ensuring our actions reflect our community's values of fairness and justice.
To enhance collaboration among the Sheriff’s Office, City and Town Councils, County Commissioners, local city and town police departments, and the community,.I propose regular inter-agency meetings to discuss mutual concerns and opportunities for joint initiatives. I also plan to establish community liaison roles within the Sheriff’s Office to facilitate ongoing dialogue and partnership on safety and community well-being projects, ensuring we work together efficiently to serve our county.
As potentially Denton County's first African American Sheriff, enhancing race relations is deeply important to me. I aim to lead the Sheriff’s Office in fostering open communication, trust, and accountability. My plans include updating diversity, sensitivity & de-escalation training, possibly creating a community advisory board to tackle race and policing issues, and amplifying our outreach to ensure every community feels respected and understood.
To address the issue of mentally ill persons in jail, I advocate for the expansion of mental health intervention programs within the judicial system. This includes the development of alternative diversion programs that provide treatment and support rather than incarceration for non-violent offenders with mental illness. Collaborating with mental health professionals and organizations, we can create pathways to care that address the root causes of behavior and help prevent those from falling back into crime.
The most pressing issues in our county include public safety, mental health, and community-police relations. To address these, I plan to enhance training for officers in crisis intervention and mental health awareness, invest in community policing to build trust and cooperation, and leverage technology to improve safety and efficiency in law enforcement practices. By focusing on these areas, we can create a safer, more inclusive, and unified community.
