Committed to serving our community for over 34 years in a law enforcement capacity. Serving as chief of police of the Kansas City Police Department for over five and a half years with over 1,800 employees and an annual budget of $230M afforded me an opportunity to use my leadership skill set a the highest level in municipal level law enforcement. I have comprehensive experience in all areas of administration of police affairs with an unblemished proven record of progressive leadership, suppression of crimes through community partnerships utilizing crime prevention strategies, nationally recognized for successful risk management initiatives, impressive management of civil unrest during tumultuous times in our nation as well as recognized for outstanding community engagement efforts. Inclusion is important to me. For the first time in the nearly 200 year history of the sheriff's office a female was promoted to the rank of captain. Equal opportunity has been more than a slogan to me.
Upon becoming a member of the sheriff's office I discovered criminal activity within the office. A few people were on the county payroll who were being compensated without contributing. In fact, they were not required to come to the office. I spent the first 90 days physically verifying the presence of every staff member. Many at the sheriff's office had knowledge of the criminal activity but remained silent. I have approved the purchase of software that will help increase efficiency and transparency. The acquisition of the software will be beneficial in tracking of: citizen complaints, policy violations, pursuit reports, sheriff's office-involved vehicle crash reporting, critical incident exposure reports, and reports of disciplinary history that might assist with early warning of a member who might need attention. The system is paperless thus reducing the possibility of misplaced documents. Most beneficial component is that integrity issues can be swiftly identified and addressed.
