What experience and skills do you bring to solving problems?

As population growth continues in the south and west parts of the district, what would you do to achieve reasonable class size in all schools, including the newly-opened Antelope Elementary and Hidden Valley Junior High Schools?

I have both the legal and financial background to ensure that the district is fiscally sound while providing a high level of education to students. I graduated from the University of Utah with a B.S. in Accounting, an MBA, and a law degree. I passed the CPA exam and I have 20 years experience litigating complex legal disputes.
I support building new schools and hiring more teachers to meet the educational demands of a growing population. The Utah Legislature has acknowledged that schools serve as important civic centers and I believe that schools are the lifeblood of our communities. We cannot let our communities and children down by refusing to invest in new schools and teachers. My opponent has pushed a dangerously radical plan to replace schools and teachers with online homeschooling that has awful academic results. The objective evidence demonstrates that "blended learning" does not work.
The key to attracting and retaining the best teachers is to compensate teachers competitively with other districts. Jordan School District teacher compensation is behind other districts in the area. Treating teachers with respect and dignity is also important to retain teachers. The district failed to treat its teachers with respect when it was the only district in the state to place restrictions on payments to teachers pursuant to the 2019 Teacher and Student Success Act.

I support programs that ensure inclusion for all students regardless of their socioeconomic or family background. I also support the protection of students’ civil rights. As an attorney involved in civil rights litigation against the school district, I discovered during depositions of Jordan School District administrators that district personnel were uninformed and uneducated about federal laws enacted to protect disadvantaged students. In fact, the district’s top compliance officer was ignorant about federal anti-discrimination laws that the district is obligated to comply with as a condition to receive federal funding. The district should comply with federal laws designed to protect students not just because it is the law, but because it is the right thing to do. If elected, I would move for the creation of a civil rights committee to investigate the district's compliance with civil rights compliance and create a compliance plan.
The most critical need facing the district is ensuring that the district builds schools and hire teachers to meet the growing number of students in the district. My opponent seeks to replace an education system with a decades-long track record of success and replace it with a radical online program in which students watch YouTube-like videos in their home instead of learning in the classroom. This radical experiment must be stopped.
