If re-elected my priorities would be to seek sufficient funding to ensure that families going through a divorce receive the necessary services to reduce trauma to children, to assist children in learning coping/problem solving skills so that they are emotionally healthy, and assist parents in developing better co-parenting and parenting skills. My priority would also be to encourage more individuals and businesses to utilize the Commercial Court so they can receive quick assess and resolution to their business disputes.
We need to have alternatives to incarceration. However, I believe we need more focus and financial resources dedicated to children in their early childhood and teenage years to minimize the path to incarceration. Alternative approaches are reaction based and we need to be more focused on prevention. Prevention will cost our county less in the long term if we are willing to be patient to see the results.
No. All citizens in Vigo County do not have adequate access to legal help because there is a shortage of attorneys in rural communities. Vigo County has a difficult time recruiting young attorneys. Moreover, many of our societal problems stem from family law issues and a majority of parents going through a divorce do not have legal representation because they cannot afford it. We should have more funding for legal aid clinics to ensure adequate access.
I ensure such by disclosing to the parties and/or their attorneys any relationship I might have or any personal knowledge I might have of parties appearing in my court. If my relationship could be perceived as creating a bias, I recuse from the case and if the parties believe that the integrity and independence of the process is undermined, they are given an opportunity to request that I recuse myself from the case. I believe I have developed a reputation of being fair and making my decisions based purely on the law and the facts without any external influences.
