Qasim's campaign is centered around uplifting and empowering working families in the 28th senate district and across the Commonwealth. This means a living wage, paid family and medical leave, and strong unions; fighting extreme inequality and the corruption of corporate money in government; accessible, affordable healthcare for all; better funded public schools and better paid public school teachers; anti-discrimination measures in housing and the workplace; and a clean, healthy environment.
Qasim supports allowing same-day voter registration and no-excuse early voting. Qasim also supports making Election Day a state holiday.
Qasim believes that Virginia’s election districts should be fair and free of partisan gerrymandering. Gerrymandered districts have long plagued the Commonwealth of Virginia, allowing power to be taken away from citizens at the ballot box. Instead of letting voters pick their representatives, the powerful pick their voters by designing districts that keep them in power. This must change. As Senator, Qasim will fight to bring real reform to the Commonwealth’s next redistricting in 2021, such as establishing the Virginia Redistricting Commission. Qasim will support legislation that keep our communities together and prohibit partisan gerrymandering.
Qasim believes we can encourage responsible gun ownership while protecting our children and communities from gun violence through common-sense gun law reform, including background checks and waiting periods.
