What do you see as the best plan for the Broad Street development? Will it include affordable housing?
What plans do you have for making Summit more in line with "green" environmental policies? What is your position on solar energy for town buildings and new development> What about electric car charging stations in strategic locations in Summit?
During my tenure on Summit’s Council, the Broad Street West redevelopment project has been a major priority. We have held numerous public forums, solicited resident feedback through social media and online sites, met with stakeholders and area property owners and consulted with planners and interested developers who presented conceptual designs. In May, the Council adopted a comprehensive redevelopment plan. Currently, we are negotiating with developers to come up with specific proposals that are consistent with the plan. We hope and expect that the end product will be a welcome extension of our current vibrant downtown with additional housing options, retail and/or entertainment uses, public areas and office space.
In addition to the legally required affordable housing obligation, we also expect to see a number of smaller, more affordable housing options incorporated into the plan. Anyone interested in reading the full plan can go to www.cityofsummit.org.
Sound environmental policies are vitally important to Summit’s future success. Currently, the Council is working to develop restrictions on single use plastics, constructing a permanent Free Market building at the transfer station and exploring the possibility of developing a community solar plan, among other initiatives. Sustainability (including solar-ready construction) is a priority for the Broad Street West redevelopment as well as in developing plans for the new firehouse. In addition, the Council has already approved plans for an electric vehicle charging station that will be located in one of the DeForest parking lots.
