Clinton Township School District - 2 year unexpired term.

The Clinton Township School District, in partnership with the community, achieves excellence for each child by ensuring a meaningful and challenging educational experience in a supportive environment, developing life-long learners who are responsible and productive citizens. The Clinton Township Board of Education is a 9 member elected body that adopts policy for the daily operation of schools and sees that school laws are properly explained, enforced, and observed. This election will fill a 2-year unexpired term on the Board.

As a parent with a PhD in chemical engineering, an MBA in finance and strategy, and a 20-year corporate career, I bring highly relevant experience to the Board. Highlights include:

• Teamwork: Led and served on numerous multi-functional corporate teams; ultimately coached others on team operation

• Finance: Developed short & long-term business plans and strategies; modeled finances of new ventures; highly skilled with complex spreadsheets

• Negotiation: Negotiated sales contracts with customers

• Leadership / hiring: Directly managed people; led teams; interviewed >50 people

• Personal: 20-year resident in district; parent of an 8th grader; active volunteer in the schools (class parent, fundraiser publicity manager, chaperone)
I am a big fan of the engaging learning-by-doing approach to civics in our schools, where students experience civics with projects versus only reading about it. In middle school, civics education is logically intertwined with US history. When 8th graders learn about the founding of our country and government, they also learn how that balance of powers still applies today. In fact, parallels are drawn to apply lessons to their own lives, e.g., in debating an issue, researching a candidate, protesting a wrong, or even simply understanding whether rights have been violated. And they learn critical skills, like how to listen to other opinions and see another point of view. To improve, I would increase analytical skill development even further.
Student safety has, by necessity, become a priority in our schools. To keep our kids safer, I support strengthening school mental health programs, e.g., by staffing additional school psychologists and counselors, and training to identify threats earlier (with bias training also, to avoid disproportionately impacting any group). Additional technology should be implemented, including streamlined emergency communication systems and advanced locking and surveillance equipment in the schools. Finally, I am open to the presence of trained professional security, e.g., retired police officers, in the schools. However, I oppose the arming of teachers, as this approach likely poses higher risk of accident than benefit in preventing an attack.
