Working as a bilingual educator for 3 years has prepared me for serving on the board.
The three most important challenges facing my school district are 1. A lack of effective communication with the community 2. A negative district environment 3. A growing school population that we are currently not able to fit in our school buildings.
I would address the first issue by building relationships with community members, insisting on using as many channels of communication with stakeholder, especially social media and getting a group or perhaps committee that can help monitor communications. The second I would address by listening to teachers to see what is needed to turn the school district into a more positive work environment. For the third issue, I would support the most affordable, expedient and safe expansion of our school buildings and insist that we have classroom ready for students sooner rather than later.
I think it would be helpful to create more internship opportunities for middle and high school students to work on local and state campaigns.
I support social and emotional learning programs that help students understand their emotions and find healthy outlets to express their feelings. I oppose any measure that seeks to arm teachers.
