What are the most important aspects of the job of Treasurer?

What are the duties of Treasurer of Washington County and what skills are needed to accomplish these duties?

Do you have suggestions for making government more efficient or for finding ways to save money in county government?

Should Washington County government and the Washington County Schools have a more detailed, long-term Capital Improvement Program to plan for needed renovations and new buildings? (We are facing renovating/building a courthouse, and many county schools are now over 50 years old.)

In 2018 the debt per capita in Washington County was $229 compared to the town of Abingdon’s $1,565. Do you feel that bonds can be floated/created to cover costs for a new courthouse or new schools?

First and foremost, a local elected official is a “public servant” in the truest sense of the word. A treasurer needs to be seen in the community and working for the community, whether it’s at a civic meeting, ball game, store or out mowing the grass… the job is never far away. It is not, and should never be considered, a “nine to five job”! A Treasurer is charged with numerous duties spread throughout Virginia Code. My goal has always been to provide excellent customer service and perform my duties in a fair and consistent manner to serve our citizens. We have taken every opportunity to go above the normal customer services offered. We were the first Constitutional Office in the Commonwealth to become both a DMV Select Office and a United State Passport Agent.
We have three very broad duties established in Virginia Code: 1)The collection of Revenue 2)The disbursement of Revenue 3)The “safe-keeping” (investment)of Revenue

Washington County needs to maintain a diversified tax base. We should never rely on one type of tax base. We desperately need to recruit clean development and to create jobs that will help us retain our best and brightest.
Yes, however the ability to pay and the willingness to pay are two entirely different things
