Personal Biography Lauren Tice Miller is a graduate of Shawnee Heights and passionate about education. She and her husband, Matt, are raising their three children in the district. Lauren was first elected in 2015, and became the 7th woman in the history of the district to serve on the board. She has more than 10 years of experience in the communication field and currently works as Communications Director to Senate Minority Leader Anthony Hensley.

I am a graduate of Shawnee Heights High School, and I attended Tecumseh South Elementary. My husband and I have owned a home within the Position 1A boundary for the past six years, and our son attended Shawnee Heights Elementary. This allows me to bring insights and experience to the board as a former student and as a parent within the district.

Additionally, I have worked for the Kansas Legislature for the past seven years. I have direct knowledge of the issues impacting school districts from the state level.

Finally, as a communications professional with more than a decade of experience, I not only work to communicate effectively with patrons, but I help identify communication issues within the district.
There are two issues that I believe are critical, and they go hand-in-hand.

First, the Kansas Legislature provided funding for K-12 public schools this past legislative session, and the Kansas Supreme Court determined it was adequate. However, with the way the Legislature works, nothing is ever permanent. As a board we must continue to be fiscally responsible while also continuing to advocate for adequate and equitable funding.

The second critical issue is providing our students with resources and services that fit their social and emotional needs. We recently found out that 32.5% of respondents to our Communities that Care survey indicated feelings of sadness or hopelessness in the past 12 months. Furthermore, 21.9% had seriously thought about killing themselves at any time in the past year.
I believe it is the school board’s responsibility to maintain a high level of trust with all staff. I also believe that employees should be provided with resources and opportunities to create the best possible learning environments for our students. This includes professional development opportunities, work/life balance initiatives, and access to benefits that provide a multitude of services. Happy employees create a happy workplace, which, in turn, creates successful students.
The best thing we can do to increase security is to continue working to address the root cause of school violence. This means investing in social and emotional support for our students as well as adopting a zero tolerance policy on bullying with uniform processes and procedures. Fortunately, we already have a mental health team in place that is looking into these kinds of measures.
I take my position on the board very seriously, and I’m willing to commit however much time it takes to adequately and effectively fulfill my responsibilities to the district and our patrons.
