My top three state priority issues are gun violence, energy, and transportation. Gun violence is one of the foremost problems we need to tackle today. I supported and sponsored the recent package of bills designed to tackle the gun violence epidemic, and I will continue to advocate for stronger measures to reduce gun violence and protect New Jersey’s residents. Climate change is undoubtedly a problem, and we need to take measures to address it. I am a supporter of hydrogen fuel cell and offshore wind technology, which will hopefully allow us to remove ourselves from the use of fossil fuels. Finally, New Jersey’s public transportation is sorely lacking, and we need to improve it by rebuilding the Port Authority Bus Terminal and addressing the myriad of issues with NJ Transit.
New Jersey has some of the highest property taxes in the nation, and they need to be used in a more efficient, beneficial manner through shared services. Currently, property taxes fund much of our public education system, and by increasing state funding, some of the burden will be taken off of local property taxes. I am a strong believer in the importance of education, both in educating our youth and preparing them to tackle the challenges of tomorrow. We need to increase state funding for education—for public schools—to use our property taxes in a way that has the greatest future payoff.
To promote job growth in our state, I would advocate for more programs that provide support, both financial and informational, to small businesses to allow them to expand and continue providing products and services to the residents of New Jersey. Additionally, minority, women, and small business owners should be more strongly supported by the state, particularly as the population of New Jersey is one of the most diverse in the nation. To promote job growth in this area, I would advocate for programs to assist these business owners to navigate the sometimes complex public contracting process.
