District North Allegheny
1) North Allegheny is experiencing the highest enrollment in its history. The Board of Directors must work with administration to establish a vision and develop a comprehensive plan to accommodate the existing population and prepare for the future. 2) Hiring educators of the highest quality will be paramount in the coming years. Since 2009, teaching certificates issued in PA dropped by 71%. Recruiting and employing the best teachers in the state is crucial. 3) Re-instituting North Allegheny’s cyber school will allow the district to maintain its financial resources and will provide options for students' start times.
NA’s Diversity Committee does an very admirable job in allowing our school populations to experience and celebrate various cultures, races, religions, physical impairments, and sexual orientations. Yet, showcasing, rather than integrating, can give schools a false sense of being culturally responsive. These students need to identify with images, personnel, and resources within our schools and participate in classroom practices that reflect their race, culture, socioeconomic status, etc,
PA students are permitted to start kindergarten if they are 5 yrs before September 1st. Thus, there are classes of students who may be a year’s difference in age, motor skills, maturity, etc. Additionally, experiences that children have prior to entering school are also determiners of success. Partnerships between communities and schools can provide opportunities to play, explore, and cooperate. Also, schools can work with parents to share resources to better prepare children for success.

1. Prepare for the districts rising enrollment. NA has its highest enrollment ever this year, and is looking at its highest kindergarten enrollment for the coming year. Families are moving to NA, and we need to responsibly plan for these new students. 2. Continue to support the districts adoption of the Measuring Success Framework. (https://www.northallegheny.org/cms/lib/PA01001119/Centricity/Domain/2283/index.html) Student success should not be only tied to test scores, we need to focus on the whole child. 3. Champion fiscal responsibility. The districts finances have improved, we need to continue that diligence.
I vigorously support the district’s efforts to support diversity, including the diversity committee, the Celebration of Us event, the Diversity Expression Contest, and other initiatives to broaden and deepen diversity at NA. The more NA celebrates and promotes its diversity, the more social and racial justice will become a tenant of our culture.
The district’s ability to influence pre-kindergarten education is primarily rhetorical. We can, however, create relationships with area early childhood education centers and continue to promote these centers for families with young children.

1) Support the continued implementation of programs that will improve our performance within the district's Measuring Success framework, (https://www.northallegheny.org/cms/lib/PA01001119/Centricity/Domain/2283/index.html), such as new approaches to homework, technology implementation, and high school start times. 2) Continue to improve our facilities to accommodate rising enrollment while providing safe and welcoming environments for kids. 3) Continue to make data-driven decisions that are financially responsible and made in the context of long-term planning.
I will continue to support the district's Diversity initiatives (https://www.northallegheny.org/domain/11) and encourage cross-cultural conversations within our broader community when opportunities arise.
School Board members only have authority through District policies and oversight, so our ability to impact Pre-K programs is primarily through our ability to use our voices to influence the community at large. In addition, we also authorize financial support for the Early Childhood Education program at Beattie Career Center.

Qualifications for office Over the past six years, I have developed a deep knowledge of the district by attending over 125 school board meetings and serving on a half-dozen district-wide advisory committees. At the individual school level, I’ve served as PTA president, vice president, and treasurer. In addition, the analytical skills I honed working as an air quality engineer for the Pennsylvania DEP for seven years are well-suited to understanding budgets and financial projections.

1) Make fiscally responsible, long-term plans for improving our facilities, especially considering our rising enrollment

2) Promote student wellness, including efforts to reduce student stress and to measure success as more than grades and test scores

3) Continue to provide excellent academic and extracurricular experiences for all students
The district’s efforts to embrace diversity and inclusion are key to producing graduates who will promote social and racial justice, and who can thrive in our nation’s multi-cultural environment. I will encourage the district to continue its K-12 diversity programs at all our buildings, and I support the Diversity Committee’s recently proposed next steps: to provide more professional development for our staff and to analyze data related to bullying and diversity from the annual climate survey.
While formal learning in North Allegheny starts in kindergarten, we educate students about early learning and provide opportunities for students to prepare for careers with young children. The Preschool Practicum at North Allegheny Senior High provides an affordable preschool experience for future NA students every year, while also giving high school seniors hands-on education in child development. The district also supports Beattie Career Center and their Early Childhood Education Program.
