My three priorities are: #1 Standard of Excellence - Continue to grow the excellence of our schools while maintaining financial accountability #2 Student Assets - We need to help students develop skills to cope with a multitude of issues in addition to their classwork. #3 Evaluate Resources- Review policies and compare them with procedures and practices to make sure the policies established by the Board are being implemented authentically.

The School Board sets the policy for the district, and the administration and staff develop the programming to enact those policies in the most effective manner. As a new Board Member, I would look at the policies the district has in place and discuss how those are positive or need to be improved. Schools, now more than ever, must be the center of promoting understanding of individual differences, whether they are cultural, societal or racial.

Every child needs to be ready to learn on his/her first day of school. This requires a sound social, emotional and academic foundation. FCASD has always been on the leading edge of child readiness and continues to maintain that commitment. I recognize that not every child comes to FCASD on equal footing. As a board member, it is important to allocate resources to ensure each child is as ready for FCASD as we are for them.

Qualifications for office Over the last 15 years, I worked with adolescents experiencing complex emotional difficulties as a mental health therapist in school and community based settings, helped develop and grow a small business, and championed advocacy work both locally and within the school district. These positions afforded me the opportunity to work with diverse ethnic, cultural, religious, and socioeconomic communities. I spent countless hours over the last 7 years, with my 2 children who attend the Fox Chapel Area School District, volunteering in our local schools supporting educational and arts programming.

Accountability – Between Jan. 2015 and Jan. 2019, the average public School Board meeting was 34 min. long. Oversight is the job of the School Board and serves to ensure the decisions being made are wise. Transparency - Public meetings are the backbone of School Board communication with community members. The School board has a responsibility as a whole to plan, deliberate, vote on, and follow up on the progress being made in public meetings. Fiscal Responsibility – The Fox Chapel Area School District has a $98 million budget. True oversight where School Board members ensure every dollar is well spent is not optional
First, underrepresented portions of our community must be empowered to have a voice in the process of change by identifying their concerns and priorities for making a supportive school environment. The school district must evaluate how justice issues may be impacting our students. Increasing the cultural sensitivity of staff, multicultural focus of curriculum, hiring diverse staff, and expanding and enriching early childhood education opportunities are ways to address disparities.
School Board members must be innovative and imaginative thinkers. Supporting strategic after school early childhood programming, building partnerships with organizations like libraries to create strong early childhood programs in the community, and partnering with local agencies – for instance the Preschool Early Intervention program DART – are all ways to encourage early learning. The FCASD will be starting a Pre-K program, which as it grows will increase access to early learning for kids.
