District Region 1
My priorities are improving transparency, ensuring fiscal accountability, and promoting evidence-based innovation. Three specific initiatives I would pursue are:

1. Changing the policies of the Board to allow for more opportunity for public comment. 2. Establishing Board committees, with representation of all stakeholders, on Finance and Educational Programs so that there is a venue for more open review of important financial and policy decisions. 3. Instituting policies to ensure evaluation of district pilot programs and periodic evaluation of core educational programs.
First, I will advocate for an assessment of our educational climate to ensure that we have school environments that are welcoming and supportive of the needs of students of all backgrounds.

Secondly, I highly value social studies and civics education. Excellent programs in these areas should include a balanced view of social and economic history, our nation’s achievements and on-going struggles related to equality, and the role every citizen plays in the effort to “form a more perfect union.”
The new pre-K program is a positive step, however it will only serve 20 children. The School Board should request an evaluation plan for this program to gain an understanding of its impact, guide improvements, and inform decisions about potential expansion. The board can also charter a more comprehensive early learning strategy that touches the community through partnerships with the Library, the Lauri Ann West Community Center, local healthcare providers, and other community organizations.
