Centennial School District School Director Region 1 (4 YR Term) {_getChooseLabel(this.selections.length)}

A school board is a legislative body of citizens called school directors, who are elected locally by their fellow citizens and who serve as the governing body of each public school district. Each board consists of nine members who serve four-year terms of office. Unlike most other elected officials, school directors receive no compensation for their work. Principal duties include appointing and/or dismissing superintendents, principals and teachers; levying school taxes; purchasing land; locating new buildings; adopting textbooks and courses of study; fixing salaries of teachers and other appointees of the Board.

I was originally encouraged to run for School Director by the Superintendent of Schools and felt is was a good way to give back for the positive experiences of my three children. I had already served on several committees of the district (Citizen's Policy, Technology, etc..). My youngest child was still in high school. Twelve years later, the issues have expanded. While we are working collectively as a board of school directors in Centennial School District together with its administration, I am also active with the Pennsylvania School Boards Association where I continue to serve as a member of the Legislative Advocacy Council and regularly interact with our legislators to secure funding, control charter/cyber charter schools, improve the quality of education in the Commonwealth and reduce the cost of pensions and unfunded mandates which place an unfair burden on our community. Proportionately, Centennial SD receives a lower share of state and federal funding than most other districts.
Over my three terms to date as an elected school director, I have received more than 500 hours of training in several areas and new help to train others. I remain current on issues and innovation by attending state and national association meetings to receive continuing education. I have served seven years as an officer and governing board member of Pennsylvania School Boards Association, where I remain a trustee. I have also served on committees for special projects of the PA State Board of Education, testified about public education before our General Assembly and committees of Congress. I am Vice-Chair of Middle Bucks Institute of Technology, Co-Chair of Keystone State Education Coalition. I have served four years as a Director of the Network for Public Education, and on committees of National School Boards Association (Teacher Principal Effectiveness Committee / Early Childhood Education Committee / Nominating Committee). I am a NSBA Federal Relations Network Delegate since 2009.
