City Council District 8
The Home Rule Charter established the
City Council as the legislative arm of Philadelphia government. Ten members of
the City Council are elected by district and represent a section of the city. Each
Councilperson must be at least 25 years old, US citizens, and a resident of
Philadelphia for at least one year. Each Councilperson is elected for a term of
four years with no term limits.
Council members are responsible
for introducing and passing bills that directly impact the quality of life for
Philadelphians. Public City Council meeting are held weekly. Passage of a bill
requires the favorable vote of a majority of all members of Council. A bill
becomes law upon the approval of the Mayor. If the Mayor vetoes a bill, Council
may override the veto by a two-thirds vote.

What reform do you believe is most important to making City Hall more transparent, accessible and responsive to voters?
As a City Councilperson, City government and citizens have to work together to combat crime, gun violence and the opioid and drug addiction problems. Significant crime with limited enforcement from city agencies when constituents request services and almost no follow up from 311 has frustrated and angered citizens. We work very hard to address these matters and give confidence to our community members, but must reform our budget to address the basic wants and needs of vulnerable communities. Philadelphia has long suffered with a reputation of corruption and lack of transparency leading to a distrust of government. We can take steps to grow out of this problem by continuing to improve ethical oversight, support anti-gerrymandering measures, promote transparency, and keep the community informed of key bills and initiatives by City Council. Inform, engage and empower citizens with the information they need -not only to vote, but to participate in shaping our government.
