We should ensure that feminine hygiene products and other female-only necessities are not taxed in the same way as normal consumables, and continue to ensure equality in the workplace (equal pay for equal work, etc.). When problems arise the legislature should work quickly to ensure fairness.
This is the #1 issue affecting our state and should be treated as such. Every child should be given an equal opportunity in life and that starts with a quality education. Children do not have choices in where they are born, and we must ensure that we are giving them the best education possible. I have written extensively on this subject on my website and given practical solutions that both sides of the aisle, if committed to working together, should pass. That, in brief, is as follows: 1) Update the 50+ year-old funding formula. 2) Lower our student/teacher ratio (enforce laws already on the books). 3) Increase parental school choice through high-quality charter schools so long as they are held to high standards.
Tax policy. We are now receiving more money as a state than ever before, spending even more and going into long-term debt, yet not many are paying attention to this. We have less going towards education, and more going towards 'attracting big businesses'. I am a businessman having started and sold several successful businesses. Politicians over-promise and underdeliver - a serious problem. What we are doing is not sustainable or smart - but politicians are largely funded by these large organizations. We must correct the course now. If we want to remain a low tax state, then we must not give away our precious tax dollars. I am a big believer that we should not socialize costs and privatize profits - yet this has been happening more and more.
Criminals with a history of violence with weapons and those with severe mental illness should preclude a person from owning a firearm - and therefore we need background checks. This basically means enforcing our previously written laws and closing loopholes. Once a person has a firearm (legally), the government should not restrict their presence unless they can ensure a safe environment. For instance, I walk to UNLV campus and may pull a wagon which could contain anything. UNLV campus is a 'gun-free' zone, even though there is nothing to stop a person from coming onto campus with a firearm. This seems to put the law-abiding into jeopardy.
So many issues to discuss here, but I am running for a state position - not a federal one. That said, with everything we do we must think about the many sides of issue. With immigration, we should ensure that people are able to come here, while at the same time not rewarding 'bad behavior'. When we reward anyone who does something wrong, it encourages that same type of action - whether it be laughing when a baby throws their food on the ground, or bailing out large businesses that are "too big to fail" without any serious repercussions. Immigration is the same. We need to ensure that our policies reward 'good actors', NOT reward bad behavior, all while not punishing children who did not have a choice in the matter.
