Our district is home to the most renowned medical center in the world, so it is vital that we have a representative who believes in science and medicine. My opponent has cozied up to anti-vaccination extremists. I have fought for science-based health policies, such as easy access to life-saving vaccinations, better access to women’s health services, and improved mental health services. I have also advocated for expanded access to graduate medical degree programs. I have voted for property tax relief, and twice passed legislation to require reappraisals for property damaged by storms prior to Hurricane Harvey making landfall. Lastly, we must ensure area residents have the support they need to rebuild their homes and lives following the devastation of Harvey.
I believe in supporting our area public schools rather than diverting funding from them through ill-conceived privatization schemes. I voted to increase the state share of education funding by $1.8 billion, which would have allowed local districts to reduce school property taxes while reducing the impact of the Robin Hood redistribution scheme. We must reform school finance, invest in our teachers, stabilize teacher health and pension systems, and support educators as the professionals they are, who make a tremendous difference in the lives of our children.
I have a record of voting for tougher penalties for human traffickers, who exploit and sell women and children through the sex trade. We should continue to prosecute traffickers, and provide better victim services for those who have been harmed and exploited by these criminal organizations. It’s not enough to prosecute traffickers, we must help their victims put their lives back together again.
