I've been an educator for 10 years and a child advocate for 16 years. I've been a classroom teacher in various school settings, a community leader as a staff pastor at St. John's Downtown, and currently serve as a district administrator for HISD.
I believe standardized testing is an important tool for comparing student progress at a local, state, and national level. However, the STAAR does not adequately diagnose student learning needs. The test measures a student's ability to showcase mastered objectives as well as critically think. It does not effectively diagnose areas where students may have a learning NEED.
Given this term's increase in the Permanent School Fund's value, I believe the current investment policies are solid and sustainable. In terms of the equitable distribution of these funds, I want to ensure a fair & transparent rubric that captures the real needs of schools is enforced. This rubric would take into account factors including neighborhood & community obstacles
If given the opportunity to serve in this role, I will ensure curriculum resources are culturally inclusive, relevant to the generation they serve, and effective in promoting rigorous learning environments. I believe creating and encouraging parent and family curriculum is a crucial supplement to every students holistic learning experience.
