What are the duties of the office of sheriff? What makes you qualified to serve as sheriff?

What are your priorities as you serve another term?

How would you improve or change the workings of the office of sheriff?

The Sheriff’s Office is responsible for Courthouse Security, Inmate Transportation, Court-Based Extraditions, and Civil Process. My qualifications to serve as Sheriff include a B.A. in Criminal Justice from Longwood, a Graduate Certificate in Public Administration from the University of Virginia, and my experience. I served as a Probation Officer, a Police Officer, and currently I serve as Sheriff. I am also Chair of the Regional Jail Board and Secretary of the Virginia Sheriff’s Institute.
My priorities as I serve another term are to continue and increase community outreach. We have safety and educational programs for senior citizens through TRIAD, various presentations including Bullying Awareness for youth, and a Basic Self-Defense Class for adults in the community. We are also working on becoming an accredited agency. We meet all required standards for Department of Criminal Justice Services, so becoming accredited has become a project for the entire Office.
We have made many improvements and increased our accountability since I took Office in January of 2010. There is an upcoming renovation scheduled for the Circuit Court which will give us an opportunity to increase safety and security for persons in custody, courthouse staff, as well as the general public. We will continue to monitor changes in technology as well as changes in various procedures across the state to find ways to improve. I thank you for your time and attention.
