As a member of the East Cleveland School Board I would bring change. My ability to analyze data would allow us to see trends, areas of success as well as areas of opportunity. Having been a partner in the community I have a greater understanding of resources available to our students and their families outside the school district. Because I come from a family of educators, I understand the responsibility of our teacher and principals. As a parent I've had opportunity to discuss the concerns of other parents.
The most significant issue facing East Cleveland Schools is improving student achievement as it relates to the state report card. It is imperative that we set a clear vision for the school district, and develop an action plan with specific goals and standards. We must be transparent and communicate well with parents, guardians and other members of the community. It is necessary that we adopt a fiscally sound budget to make best use of resources. There is a direct correlation between the wealth of a city and the success of its schools. It's important that members of the school board understand how to read financial statements and how to budget properly. Using community partners to help educate the whole child, would only foster success. Improvement in our parent involvement is crucial to our success also. As parents become more involved they they will help us hold our superintendent, teachers, and students accountable.
East Cleveland is currently ranked 606 of 608 school districts in Ohio. We have scored poorly on our last 13 state report cards. Our school board must be transparent. They have to hold the Superintendent and staff accountable to set goals. Each year we must evaluate the effectiveness of programs within our schools.
