What viable tactical steps are you proposing that would attract people to your city/town and keep current residents from leaving Long Island for other states?

What specifically will you do to increase the availability of low income/middle class housing, rental as well as ownership, in order to keep our young people from leaving and to attract other young people to our communities.

Since we are seeing the effects of climate change in the form of serious hurricanes and other weather events here and elsewhere in the country, what will you do to strengthen the infrastructure of our towns and cities to deal with the aftermath of such events?

We need a business friendly environment and a modern tax code for residents. Whether it be a professional sports team or a large firm, the Town of North Hempstead should be an inviting place to call home. Modern communication technology allows people and companies more choice in their geographic location than ever before, we must be competitive by the numbers in order to attract and retain them. This should involve overhauling and simplifying our property tax assessment system. This problem is larger than one Town Clerk office, but I am ready and willing to be part of the solution in any way I can. Every level of government has a responsibility to improve this situation, and use every tax dollar wisely. Electing the next generation of leaders who are qualified and willing to serve also assists the effort of keeping government in touch with multiple generations.
As Town Clerk, I can assist the Building Department operations in order to increase their building permit response times. The current rate of building permits being issued is not what young people would expect in the information age. A slow permit process slows down the velocity of money within our local economy, hurting developers, and young residents seeking housing to rent or buy, or businesses needing to implement renovations. A keen engineering mindset will help improve the workflow for this long term goal that has yet to be brought up to resident expectations.
Whether any disaster is a man-made or natural event, preparedness is a vital function of the government. Local government especially has a responsibility to support its first responders and help residents be prepared, before state and federal resources are brought in. I have responded as a volunteer firefighter to Hurricane Sandy and other storms over the years, and know what first responders and residents need. I also helped inventory replacement electrical equipment needed for the New York Aquarium in the aftermath of Sandy, as backup generators were keeping the marine life alive. I will use my knowledge and experience to act as a resource to the Town departments and residents. As Town Clerk, it is important to backup information and have a disaster recovery plan for all town offices.

As Town Clerk, I have no direct jurisdiction over zoning or economic development. However, where appropriate I continue to be an advocate for transit-oriented development to provide workforce housing in our downtowns around mass transportation facilities. Workforce housing in our downtown areas offers an expanded customer base for local businesses and studies have shown that mixed-use development like this increases safety in our downtown areas. By revitalizing our downtowns with mixed-use structures and other points of cultural interest, we can modernize our communities to retain and attract young singles and couples throughout Long Island.
As more extensively described above, I support transit-oriented development with workforce housing in our downtown areas.

The key to a sustainable infrastructure in our communities is a robust resiliency plan for all aspects of our basic needs. Storm-proofing our utilities and the means to send and receive vital goods and supplies, whether by road, track or sea, is essential to any recovery effort. Where practical, locally sourced food and other goods allow for sustaining our communities while recovery efforts are underway to regain access to regional markets. Increasing incentives for the installation of generators for gas stations will further assist recovery efforts as well. The more resilient we are as communities, the more quickly we can recover and return to normal.
