4-year term No Salary, some districts offer small per diem for evening meetings. School Board Members or “directors” – are the elected governing body of the school district, serving four-year terms. The school board’s governance responsibilities fall in four major areas: Vision – focuses the work on student achievement through a comprehensive strategic planning process; Structure – provides prudent financial planning and oversight; diligent and innovative policymaking; Accountability – sets specific goals and a process for evaluation, reporting and recommendations for improvements; and Advocacy – champions public education in the local community and before state and federal policy makers. The School Board sets the general policies of the district, which are implemented by the hired professional district Superintendent and certificated teaching staff and personnel. One of the critical duties is the adoption of the district's budget and proposal of any school levies to be placed on the ballot to the people. The commission sets policies and approves all spending via the budget. The council also sets salaries for district employees.

Attracting highly qualified teachers for all of our teaching positions in the District. With the current mandate to reduce K-3 class size to a maximum of 17 students and knowing that by 2018 that the State of Washington will be lacking 4.500 to 5,000 teachers to fill those positions this issue rises to one of the most urgent issues facing Pullman School District.
Charter Schools may work well in larger urban areas but will have a difficult time surviving in the lower population areas due to the economy of scale. I'm not against having Charter Schools but I do believe our current public schools can meet the needs of all students.
We currently have excessive testing as a means to hold the school districts accountable for the funding they receive. The state needs to develop fewer tests that can achieve accountability and "diagnostics" that the school district can use to evaluate the progress of each student and identify those areas the student needs help with.
I am aware that some research indicates that a later start time could benefit students performance. In order to accommodate a later start time most of the parents would need to start their work day later which would produce the most push back. I don't see start times changing unless our entire society starts the work day later.
The On-time graduation rate can be improved by adding truancy officers which amounts to a band-aid. Perhaps implementing a cultural change that emphasises the importance of being in class all the time and the importance of graduating would be more productive. We all know that graduating from High School gives them a solid foundation for going on to further education or starting out in the work force.
A part of each years first day of school for the students should be a review that bullying is unacceptable behavior. The teachers would need to tell the students the definition of bullying and give examples. The students need to have a thorough understanding of the repercussions of violating the bullying policy. Then the teachers and administration need to enforce the policy and procedure that are in place.
All students are informed of the civics credit requirements for graduation when they enter High School. Their progress in getting those credits is monitored and discussed with the students when they meet with their counselors each year. As a district we need to be sure that the civics credit curriculum requirements are imbedded in the social studies classes the students will be taking.
We all know that most suspensions from school are not an effective method of helping the offending student change their behavior. Student suspension from school is an effective method for limiting classroom disruption. We as a school district would like to have the resources to place the offending student into a program that would both change their behavior and continue that students education path. Neither the State or society as a whole are sympathetic to the issue of disruptive students and therefore getting resources to address this issue is difficult.
