My decision to become candidate for Port Commissioner came after watching the proceedings at the Commissioner meetings at the end of 2016 and the beginning of 2017. The Commission (under my opponent’s leadership) was struggling with difficult decisions, and rather than just tell the truth, they instead offered increasingly conflicting explanations for the decisions they were making. After witnessing this, I and other concerned citizens concluded change was essential to the success and health of the Port. To that end, I was asked by fellow tenants, current and past employees to run for Port Commissioner in this 2017 election. The good people of this community deserve a well functioning group of commissioners who will be responsive to the needs of the Port, to its employees, the people of Friday Harbor and its visitors.
The three major issues facing the Port are: 1. carefully managed and sustainable growth that takes into consideration the environment and the fiscal impact on the tax payers, 2. creating a positive cash flow for airport operations and, 3. restoring trust and respect for the hard working Port staff.
In my opinion it is the first. With the possible Port acquisition of Jensen Boat Yard and Marina, a very hard look needs to be taken regarding costs to the Port due to infrastructure repair and compliance. We need to remember that it is a 100 year old facility. Repairs will most certainly be needed which will take both time and money.
I look forward to the success of both the marina and the airport. The financial health of both are my main concern. As a retired businessman, I realize the importance of fiscal responsibility. Decisions made today will affect generations to come.

I am running for re-election to provide continuity of leadership during a time of exciting changes and opportunities at the Port of Friday Harbor. Island citizens have invested in my education as a Commissioner. I will use my years of experience to take advantage of unfolding opportunities on the waterfront and at our airport. I also wish to continue the Port's leadership role as good environmental stewards. And, continue to work with the Economic Development Council (EDC), Town and County to foster year-round jobs. I look forward to continuing to bring my experience, energy, intelligence and imagination to the job if re-elected.
How do we address the effect of projected declines in private ownership of small planes and boats in the Port of Friday Harbor’s strategic planning?

How do we diversify the revenue streams to the Port?

How do we fulfill the Port’s mission of economic development?
Diversifying our revenue streams to prepare for the future and to fulfill our economic mission
The Port belongs to all San Juan Islanders. My primary interest is to ensure the continued stewardship of our property for the benefit, enjoyment and employment of islanders while also providing an outstanding visitor gateway. The San Juan Islands are a world-class visitor destination. We are charged with promoting the islands to mariners and aviators in a way that engenders respect for the environment and does not alienate or displace islanders.
