4-year term No Salary, some districts offer small per diem for evening meetings. School Board Members or “directors” – are the elected governing body of the school district, serving four-year terms. The school board’s governance responsibilities fall in four major areas: Vision – focuses the work on student achievement through a comprehensive strategic planning process; Structure – provides prudent financial planning and oversight; diligent and innovative policymaking; Accountability – sets specific goals and a process for evaluation, reporting and recommendations for improvements; and Advocacy – champions public education in the local community and before state and federal policy makers. The School Board sets the general policies of the district, which are implemented by the hired professional district Superintendent and certificated teaching staff and personnel. One of the critical duties is the adoption of the district's budget and proposal of any school levies to be placed on the ballot to the people. The commission sets policies and approves all spending via the budget. The council also sets salaries for district employees.

Experience (300 characters max) My first experience working with children was volunteering at the local YMCA (Auburn WA) teaching kids to swim. A few years later I coached little League Baseball, our sponsor was the Auburn WA Eagles club, We won the championship our first year. I've also coached Football and been a Teachers aide.
I believe our most important issue is the funding and building of a new High school for our District. A lot of research will have to be done to verify if this is a sound course of action. The idea at present time is to join both Pioneer and Hood Canal together to create a bigger District for our High school age Kids.

Cost effectiveness will be a key issue in this decision. That is to say what the impact will be on the Districts Tax payer's, as without sufficient support from the public at large the School bonds necessary for this to move forward could fail.

The current administration is looking at all angles to decide. There have been many public meetings gauging interest from the public and so far is mostly in favor. At this time no negotiations with Shelton school District have been scheduled to my knowledge. I think negotiations with Shelton school District should be done as soon as possible to ascertain if anything can be done to negotiate our amount of taxes owed to Shelton.
I don't think Charter Schools should be in the public School system. The problem I have with them is can anyone start a Charter School? Should any organization or public as well as private citizens be able to start a charter School? I think that federal guidance is the only way to make sure ALL Schools have the same rights and thereby enabling all students the same opportunities as any other School. I am currently studying Charter Schools in our state so my opinion could change on the issue.
I believe testing is a very large part of the years curriculum. It is necessary to gauge progress from students as to ascertain the different levels each child is at in the classroom thereby knowing which Kids need more attention in the many different subjects they are faced with. I believe it can be very useful for the Teachers and enable them to try and keep Kids on a level playing field. Teachers have a tough job to try and keep all their students learning on a daily basis of course every class will have Children that excel in Math for instance while others may excel in reading or other courses. I don't like the fact that many Teachers feel forced to just teach the children how to pass a certain test this is detrimental to all involved Teachers and Students alike.
I believe that our secondary School Students are faced with a longer day just for the fact they are traveling a greater distance to and from School. This makes our District unique. I think the current start time is efficient and the Students are used to it changing it could create problems with Students as well as Families. Change is not necessarily a good idea.
I believe the graduation rate could be increased by implementing a larger counseling dept which would enable Students with problems scholastically as well as personal problems a larger variety of answers to those individual problems. Those Students may need tutoring or Family counseling or any other variety of help from an outside source.

We live in a rural setting that most Schools in the state don't have, This fact could be one of the many reasons for a lower graduation rate. I think Students as well as Faculty could greatly benefit from embracing our environment and offer some classes at the High School level these Students may be interested in such as Forestry, Wood-shop, Media or a hundred other classes I haven't thought of.

The fact of the matter is when a Student is failing someone at the School should find out why and implement a program that fits that individual Student. The problem is who is responsible to check on each Students progress? Is it the Teachers, Faculty?
I think the crux of the problem is the bully. To stop bully's from bullying one must find the source. What is going on in that individuals mind are they being bullied so they think it's a natural behavior? Of course problems at home may be a cause, older siblings, relatives or just the stress involved with School. I believe that a bully must be stopped as soon as the behavior is noticed to let it go unchecked is the same as saying it's OK. Sometimes individuals bully for attention and other times a bully may be acting out for a friend or family member. Whatever the reason it's never right and must be stopped before it turns into a large problem. It should be stressed that all Students are equal and no one is above or below anyone else. Very easy to say and hard to do. In extreme cases suspension may be required but of course that may be what they want so maybe an in house form of suspension so they can watch their peer's have a good time at lunch as well as recess.
Civics could be taught in many ways. The political as well as the social side of civics should be afforded equal time in the classroom. That is to say one opinion say Democratic or Republican should not be taught. Both sides should be taught so the Students themselves can decide for themselves. I think the social implications of introducing civics is daunting on it's own. I believe a Political course as well as a Social course would be the way to go on this issue. Civics is a very broad course which would include such issues as social media, voters rights, city improvements, Political issues and global warming just name a few the topics they are endless. Students today are inundated with civics on a daily basis because civics are all around us that is to say in today's environment of Political issues and social issues at the forefront of American Journalism and the cell phone brings it on a daily basis. Classes like Politics, environment, Media, Sports or wherever Student interest are.
Dealing with the Student on a personal level would be first thing tried. If it is an ongoing problem on a weekly basis then I think suspension is a viable action however I don't believe at this time an in house suspension is available. For instance if you send the Student home for suspension you may not be solving the problem in fact it may be what the Student wants. I don't think sending the Student to the Library is the answer either.That's why I believe an in house plain room preferably with no windows would be my answer. Of Course supervision would have to be provided and this may not be a viable use of resources depending on the number of Students. This is a problem that needs to be discussed with all parties involved including the Faculty and Principal and I think the Students should have a voice as well.
