4-year term No Salary, some districts offer small per diem for evening meetings. School Board Members or “directors” – are the elected governing body of the school district, serving four-year terms. The school board’s governance responsibilities fall in four major areas: Vision – focuses the work on student achievement through a comprehensive strategic planning process; Structure – provides prudent financial planning and oversight; diligent and innovative policymaking; Accountability – sets specific goals and a process for evaluation, reporting and recommendations for improvements; and Advocacy – champions public education in the local community and before state and federal policy makers. The School Board sets the general policies of the district, which are implemented by the hired professional district Superintendent and certificated teaching staff and personnel. One of the critical duties is the adoption of the district's budget and proposal of any school levies to be placed on the ballot to the people. The commission sets policies and approves all spending via the budget. The council also sets salaries for district employees.

I believe the most urgent issue facing the Aberdeen School District is how to provide a quality education for every individual student. Each classroom is filled with great diversity of ethnicity, economic, social and educational abilities. Government issues requirements for our staff, administration and students; requiring more and more time and resources.
Charter Schools could be a benefit for our students. However, resources, safety and academic quality need to be equitable for all students and schools and not be allocated according to square footage and bodies in a building.
Testing students is beneficial for students and staff. Tests can place new students in appropriate programs, help provide goals for enhancements and provide focus for areas needing enrichment. Tests can teach, but should never take the place of quality teaching time.
Start times for elementary and secondary schools should allow enough time for a nutritious breakfast (at home or at school) and should reflect the community's economic qualities.
On time graduation rates need to be improved in most communities. Improvements come through education in and out of school buildings. When we, as a society, place more 'supported' importance on the belief that every student can and should earn a diploma; the graduation rate will improve.
Bullying should be addressed at each individual school. Student rights and freedoms need to be taught and reinforced in every school, with emphasis on 'community' values. Each student needs to feel accepted and valued as well as valuing and accepting fellow students.
This needs to be taught outside of school as well. Compassion needs to accompany thick skin.
I believe students and adults need to learn about their community as well as their location of support. Community members as well as staff could be utilized to teach and instill citizenship and responsibility. It also seems to be another requirement for a very full student schedule.
I believe some students do need some individual quiet time. I do not believe in removing a student from a school building unless it becomes dangerous for other students and staff. I would hope each school could designate a safe supervised place for a disruptive student, but resources are not always available.
