4-year term (ports in counties with over 100,000 pop); 4 or 6 year term counties with under 100,000 pop) Salary $42,106 (2013) in King, varies in other port districts. The Port District is responsible for the maintenance and operation of the port facilities within their jurisdiction. The commission sets the general policies of the district, which are implemented by the hired professional Port Director and their professional staff. One of commission's main duties is the adoption of the district's budget and proposal of any Port levies to be placed on the ballot to the people. The commission sets policies and approves all spending via the budget, whether for operations or capital items or public facility maintenance and improvements. The council also sets salaries for district employees.

I have always been interested in economic development. The Mattawa area needs development, diversification and infrastructure to provide appropriate growth opportunities for our increasingly skilled work force. I believe I can be an effective agent to promote our local capabilities in the interest of growth, stability and wellbeing of our economy.
1. Housing: It is difficult to attract desirable existing businesses, expansions or relocations since sufficient quality housing is currently unavailable. This is a chicken-or egg conundrum as it relates to attracting business.

2. Year-around employment opportunities. As an agriculturally based economy, far too much of our present work is seasonal. We need to diversify into manufacturing, logistics, retail and services. We are making progress here as established businesses require related support.

3. Overcoming existing perceptions that we are too small, too remote and too limited to accommodate businesses we'd like to attract or develop locally.

We have quality assets---Access to low cost power, world class communications, space and land, a growing and increasingly skilled work force. The Port's mission is to educate the business community concerning our facts and to recruit entities which appropriately benefit our community.
The housing issue is a sharp pointed stick, having been a "show stopper" to some past opportunities.

The perception issue is more organic and requires continuous initiative to counteract in order to get industries to commit to our area. It is and will be a work in progress for the foreseeable future. We need to achieve "critical mass" so that Mattawa is seen as a desirable destination for the industriously minded.
I want to see our economy expand and develop in an orderly and diversified manner so that our residents can enjoy continuously improving lifestyles through engaging and fruitful occupation. As with most every other rural area in America, our chief export is our young who seek better opportunity elsewhere. Our community will be stronger if we slow or reverse that process. The Port seeks to foster an economic environment which retains our young and attracts others from elsewhere.
